Letter from our Director

Letter from the Director

WINGS (Women in Need Gaining Strength) is an independent non-profit charitable society established in the summer of 1997 (# 87104 0168 RR0001). The society was simply born of a common vision by ordinary people to demonstrate responsibility toward the issues of social justice in our society today, specifically in the area of violence against women and children. The realization of the extent of domestic violence in our society today propelled us to focus our efforts here.

In December 1998 we opened Monarch Place, a first stage (12 bed, emergency, 30 day stay, 24/7 staffed) transition house for women and children fleeing violence. The house is located in New Westminster, BC, but serves the entire Metro Vancouver area and beyond. We have had residents from Vancouver Island, Northern BC, the Okanagan and as far away as Ontario, Quebec, and the USA. We have also had the privilege of serving many immigrants and refugees who have come to Canada from literally around the world. Our current statistics indicate that we have provided shelter and support to over 2361 women and 1408 children as of December 2014. Sadly, we have turned away 3 times as many people because we were full.

Over these years we have seen firsthand the devastating impact of abuse that permeates many relationships. Whether the bruises are visible on their faces or reflected in their eyes, abused women and children are some of the most vulnerable people in our society today. Our goal is to help break this vicious cycle of violence and support women and children to choose to live free from abuse. It has been an awesome privilege to serve in this field.

We have begun other programs over the years including Chrysalis Place (a second stage housing program), W.I.S.H.E.S. (Women in Safe, Healthy, Empowering Support) Groups, WINGS Outreach and Multi-cultural Outreach Services, and WINGS Counselling Services.

The mission statement of the Society is:

The purposes of the Society are:

  1. to demonstrate love and compassion for women and their children who are victims of domestic violence by providing safe, warm, friendly, caring environments through housing and support services.
  2. to enable clients to work through various stages of well-being from crisis to long-term stability by providing a full range of support services.
  3. to provide education and promote awareness for the elimination of violence against women and children by providing programs, educational opportunities, and resources.

We want to make a significant positive impact in the lives of women and children by giving them, within the context of a safe and supportive environment, the opportunity to hear about and understand their unique value and worth and begin to experience the potential this can mean in their lives.
